Matthew Menneke | Local on-site Group, Berlin/Germany

Matthew Menneke is originally from Melbourne/Australia and has now been calling Berlin home for the last six years. He is the founder and guide at On the Front Tours, a company specialized in historical tours of the Second World War.

“I have always been a close a student of military history. From a young age my bookshelves were full of history books about the Second World War in the European and the Pacific theatres. This love of history inspired me to join the Australian Army Reserve were I served eight years as a member of the 5/6th Battalion, Royal Victoria Regiment (5/6 RVR).

After leaving the Australian Army, I completed my degree in International Politics at Deakin University and spent the next eight years working in sales. Since moving to Berlin in 2015, I have had a successful career within the Berlin start-up scene working with some of the most entrepreneurial and creative businesses in the country.

I started running military history tours though Berlin as a hobby at the beginning of 2019, whenever I had a free weekend. Over the months the tours grew and my passion for guiding and showing people the immense history Berlin has to offer quickly became my full-time job. A job I look forward to everyday!

Remembrance culture is not one-dimensional. I am interested in taking part in the project by creating new avenues for people to experience and learn from these tragic events.”
