Living Memorials - our school becomes a memorial site!

From the end of August to the end of November, the exhibition Living Memorials will be on display in the Forum of Gesamtschule Friedrich Spee of Paderborn (Germany). It shows the artistic results of two workshops that took place in Novogrodek, Belarus and in the memorial Haus der Wannseekonferenz in the summer of 2021.

The heroes and heroines of the exhibition are the Bielski partisans, who saved about 1200 Jews from the clutches of the Nazis. They will have their "remembrance flowerbed" as a work of art in the school garden which is being created by the 10th grade students (history-geography-politics option) who are preparing a trip to Auschwitz.

The Living Memorials is an international project with participants from Germany, Belarus, Belgium, Turkey, Australia and Israel. This exhibition was presented for the first time in spring at the Haus der Wannseekonferenz and is in English. It is interesting not only for GL, history, English and art classes from class 10 onwards, but also for anyone who wants to know more about the background of the film "Defiance" or about art as a science.

After visiting the exhibition, SW GK Q1 pupils (Year 12 pupils studying the EU eligibility criteria) felt that a creative approach made for much more intensive learning and that it clearly showed how far Nazism had gone in Europe.
